PABS maintains a “Box Score” of species diversity in the wild in Pennsylvania. The Box Score tallies wild species known to occur in the state by higher taxonomic group such as vascular plants, birds, fishes, butterflies, fungi, etc. and by their status in Pennsylvania, including endangered, threatened or extirpated, native or non-native, and “Pennsylvania-responsibility.” The Box Score documents changes from year to year in species’ status in the state, which can result from imperiled species’ successful recovery, common species’ population crashes due to emerging threats, introduction of new non-native species, or collection of new or better information.
- PABS intends to resume updating the Box Score when qualified volunteer help is available. In the meantime, the most recent Box Score, below, still reflects the currently known biodiversity status among the state's higher taxa to a close approximation.
